What Is PAT Testing? & Other FAQs

Portable appliance testing, or PAT testing, is the assessment of electronic equipment to ensure they are safe to use. In this article, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the subject.

What & How Does It Test?

PAT testing tests portable appliances, so anything with a plug can be assessed. However, items come under certain categories, so you might not actually need it on everything. For example, class 3 items, such as phone chargers or cameras won’t need an assessment. However, things like photocopiers, microwaves, heaters, irons and kettles need to be looked at by a professional.

The test consists of a visual examination followed by the use of specialist equipment to ensure the item is safe to use in terms of electricity. It is labelled with a sticker to show if it has passed and exhibits the date of inspection.

Is It A Legal Requirement?

The law doesn’t state you need this assessment. However, if you are an employer or landlord, for example, then you have the responsibility to ensure electrical equipment is maintained. PAT testing is an excellent way to prove that this equipment is kept in good condition and this duty of care is being fulfilled.

If you are a home owner and have any worries about an appliance in your property, you may wish to call in the professionals and they will deem whether it is safe or not.

How Often Do You Need It?

The frequency of when you should get PAT testing on certain items will vary. It all depends on the safety risk, how much it is used and where it is used. If it is a power tool used on a construction site, for example, you should look at getting these examined quite frequently. This is because it’s a high risk environment and it is used quite often.
